Question 30729: a boat travels upstream for 32 miles in 2 hours.return trip at same constant speed with the same current only taking 1 hour and 36 mins.what is the speed of the boat and the speed of the current?
Answer by ikdeep(226)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
upstream distance = 32 miles
upstream time = 2 hours
upstream speed = ?
(applying the formula.. speed = distance / time)
= 32/2
= 16 miles/hour

down stream distance = 36 miles
down stream time = 1 hours
down stream speed = ?
(applying the formula ..speed = distance / time)
= 36/1
= 36 miles / hour
Now speed of boat in still water = (downstream speed + upstream speed)/2
= (36 + 16)/2
= 52 / 2
= 26 miles /hour
Now speed of current = (downstream speed - upstream speed)/2
= (36 - 16) /2
= 20/2
= 10 miles /hour
