A motorboat travels 846 miles in 9 hours going upstream and 544 miles in 4 hours going downstream. What is the rate of the boat in still water and what is the rate of the current?
-------------
846/9 = 94 mph upstream
544/4 = 136 mph downstream
The boat's speed is the average
(94 + 136)/2 = 115 mph
--------------------
The current is the difference
115 - 94 = 21 mph
