Question 283875: I am having trouble figuring out this math problem. I dont want the answer only how to solve it. 1.James’ Burger and Shakes first opened in 1950 selling hamburgers for $0.25. In 2010, the price of a burger was now $3.25.
a.On average, how much did the price of a burger increase per year? Show work to receive credit.
The answer for this one I have already figured out 5 cents increase per year
b.Let x represent the number of years after 1950 (e.g. for 1951 then x = 1). What is the cost y of a hamburger when x = 0? THIS ONE I DONT KNOW WHAT FORMULA TO USE TO FIGURE IT OUT....
Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You are going to write an equation for a straight line
with the year as x and the cost as y
x=year-1950
1950+x, y=.25
2010+x y=3.25
x=2010-1950=60 years since 1950
325-25=300
300/60=.05 cents per year
when x=0 the year is 1950 so the hamburger cost .25
y=.25+.05x your formula not really needed but it works
y= cost x=years since 1950
plug in 60 for x and find y=3.25
plug in 0 for x and get .25 for y
