Question 260954: A 178-foot pipe is cut into two pieces, so that one piece is 46 feet longer than the other. How long is the longer piece?
Answer by drk(1908) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let one piece = x.
The other is 178 - x.
x = 46 + 178-x
add x to both sides to get
2x = 46 + 178
add the numbers to get
2x = 224
divide by 2 to get
x = 112
178-x = 178-112 = 66.
The longer piece is 112 feet.
