A fish swims 12 miles down stream in 2 hours, the fish swims back up stream to the same point but the trip takes 3 hours. Assume the speed of the current was constant and the fish swims along the same path.
Write a system of linear equation to describe the situation. Determine the speed of the fish in still water and determine the speed of the current?

up . . . . . . . . . .r -c = 4 . . . .3 . . . . . . . . . . . .12
down . . . . . . . r+c = 6 . . . . 2 . . . . . . . . . . . .12
since, uptream distance = 12, and time = 2, rate = 6
since downstream distance = 12, and time = 3, rate = 4
We have two equations as
(i) r-c = 4
(ii) r+c = 6
adding together, we get
(iii) 2r = 10
r = 5
5 mph in still water
