Two angles, x and y
;
two angles are supplementary, therefore:
x + y = 180
:
the measure of one angle is 10 degrees more than three times the measure of the other angle.
x = 3y + 10
:
find the measure of each angle.
Substitute (3y+10) for x in the 1st equation
(3y+10) + y = 180
3y + y = 180 - 10
4y = 170
y =
y = 42.5 degrees
then
x = 3(42.5) + 10
x = 127.5 + 10
x = 137.5 degrees
;
:
Check solutions: 137.5 + 42.5 = 180
