Question 246116: Ralph is putting together a scrapbook, he puts four picture on each page and has three pictures left. If he started with 55 pictures, write and solve an equation to find how many pages have four pictures.

The instructor "told" us the answer was 13 but I'm not so good with word problems, I've tried: 3x+4=13,3x-4=13,4x-55=13,4x-13,etc and now I'm stumped

Answer by rapaljer(4671)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = number of pages

If there are 4 pictures per page with 3 left over, then
4x+3=55

Subtract 3 from each side:
4x=52

Divide by 4:
x=13

Answer by marcsam823(57)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = the number of pages containing 4 pictures in the scrapbook
Let 4x = the number of pictures on all "4 picture" pages
If Ralph has a total of 55 pictures and 3 left over the equation will be set up like this:
First in words:
The number of pictures on all "4 picture" pages + leftover pictures = total pictures

13 pages have 4 pictures on them
