I am thinking that this is easier then I am thinking. the amount of tax has already been given so if I set this up it would look like ...
.18/x 7/100 I would need to solve for x which will give me the cost of the ball and then I would just need to subtract from the total minus the .18

I think the key to getting this problem is to
realize (though they don't say so) that there is no
tax on the grapefruit
Let = the price of the grapefruit in cents
Let = the price of the ball (excluding tax) in cents
given:
Tax + price of ball = cents
The toal bill is cent
The price of the ball is $2.57
The price of the grapefruit is $2.40
