: Yesterday, Consuela bought some fudge and caramels for $6.00. She bought 4 pieces of fudge at 50 cents a piece and some caramels to her friend Carrie. Now she has 4 pieces of fudge and 10 caramels. If Consuela did not eat any candy yet, how many caramels did Carrie receive? This question is from textbook

Since Consuela bought 4 pieces of fudge for $0.50 each, she spent 4*(0.50) - $2.00 on the fudge.

Since she spent $6.00 in total, she must have spent $4.00 on the caramels.

At this point I have to think something is missing. All we know is that she bought more than 10 caramels. There are many combinations of number of caramels and price per caramel that will work:
Number of Caramels Price per caramel (in dollars)
   ------------------ ------------------------------
          400 0.01
          200 0.02
          100 0.04
           50 0.08
           25 0.16

To find the number of caramels Consuela gave Carris, just subtract 10 from each of these counts.
