A jeweler has bars of 18 carat gold and 12 carat gold. how much of each must be
melted together to obtain a bar of 16 carat gold, weighing 120 gm?
Given pure gold is 24 carat.
:
18 ct: = .75
Let x = amt 75% gold required
then
12 ct: = .50
(120-x) = amt of 50% gold required
and
16 ct: =
:
The amt of pure gold equation:
.75x + .50(120-x) = (120)
:
.75x + 60 -.50x = 80
:
.75x - .50x = 80 - 60
:
.25x = 20
x =
x = 80 grms of 18 ct gold
and
120 - 80 = 40 gms of 12 ct gold
:
:
Check solution:
.75x + .50(120-x) =
.75(80) + .50(40) =
60 + 20 = 80
