try to start with the unknowns , it may help you.

let the cost of the garden table and bench be g and b, respectively
:
g+b=750.......eq 1
g=2b..........eq 2
:
lets take the value of g which is 2b from eq 2 and plug it into every occurence of g in eq 1
:
2b+b=750
:
3b=750
:
highlight%28b=250%29dollars-cost of bench

incidentally that would mean that the garden table cost 500(750-250).
