Let x = "a number"
:
Write an equation for what it says:
5x + 2 = 4x + 5
:
5x - 4x = 5 - 2
:
x = 3
:
Is that so hard?

I think you can. For example -
If 3 times a number is 15, find the number. See?

If 2 is added to five times a number, the result is equal to 5 more than four times the number. find the number.
------------------
Ok, call the number N, just for convenience.
If you add 2 to it, that's N+2. Easy so far, right?
Now, it says that N+2 is equal to something. It's 5 more than 4 times N, or 5 more than 4N.
So the N+2 is 5 more than the other one, 4N, so if we add 5 to the 4N, they'll be equal.
N+2 = 4N+5 (now the words are dispensed with)
N = 4N + 3
-3N = 3
N = -1
To check, you can substitute, and it's correct.

Just take it step-by-step as you read the problem:
"If 2 is added (+2) to five times a number (5*n), the result is (=) to 5 more (+5) than four times the number (4*n)"
So we put this altogether to get:
2+5n = 5+4n Now that you have an equation in which the variable, n, stands for the number that you are to find, you can solve it for n.
2+5n = 5+4n Subtract 4n from both sides.
2+5n-4n = 5+4n-4n Simplify this by combining like-terms.
2+n = 5 Now subtract 2 from both sides.
2-2+n = 5-2 Simplify.
