Question 13456: The word problem is this : When five times a number x is subtracted form the square of the same number, the answer is 14. Find x.
I did it like this but I'm not sure if its right.
xSquared- 5x=14
Is that how its supposed to me lat me know if I'm right or wrong thanks alot for your help.
Answer by askmemath(368) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
That is correct!!
Now we have
Taking X common we have X(X-5) = 14
Factors of 14 are 7 and 2
Putting 7 on the L.H.S we get 7(7-2) = 14 = R.H.S.
Putting 2 on the L.H.S we get 2(2-5) = -14 which does not equal R.H.S
Putting -2 we get -2(-2-5) = -2(-7) = 14 = R.H.S
So numbers can be either 7 or -2
