: I am a Parent helping my child and need guidance to guide them. I would appreciate any help seeing as algebra is not my strong point. Thank you very much in advance. Here is the problem:
Problem set B question 7
In a class of 25 students, there are 7 more girls than boys. How many boys are in the class?
I figured out there are 6 boys and 19 girls, but have no idea how to get it into an equation.

Answer by Earlsdon(6294) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Ok, start by assigning variables to the unknown quantities:
Let B = the number of boys and G = the number of girls.
From the problem description, you can write:
1) G+B = 25 "In a class of 25 students,..." and...
2) G = B+7 "...there are 7 more girls than boys."
Now you substitute the second equation (G = B+7) for the G in the first equation (G+B = 25) and solve for B.
Combine like-terms.
Subtract 7 from both sides.
Finally, divide both sides by 2.
So there are 9 boys in the class.
and there are 16 girls in the class.
