1) The sum of two numbers is 17. One number is 9 more than the other one. Find the larger number.
2) The sum of two numbers is 26. One number is 12 more than the other. Find the smaller number.

let one number be x
therefore other number is = x + 9 (since one number is 9 more than other number)
sum of both number = 17

x + x + 9 = 17

2x + 9 = 17
2x + 9 - 9 = 17 - 9
2x = 8
2x/2 = 8/2
x = 4

therefore
one number is x = x = 4
other number = x + 9 = 4 + 9 = 13
2)
let one number be x
therefore other number is = x + 12 (since one number is 12 more than other number)
sum of both number = 26

x + x + 12 = 26

2x + 12 = 26
2x + 12 - 12 = 26 - 12
2x = 14
2x/2 = 14/2
x = 7

therefore
one number is x = x = 7
other number = x + 12 = 7 + 17 = 19
