: I need help with this problem because I am totally lost. Here goes:Sally is making a cover for a round table. When finished, the cover will fit exactly with no excess hanging off. Sally has to cut the fabric circle with a founr inch larger diameter than the table to allow for hemming. If the table has a diameter of 72 inches, how much fabric does Sally need? (Use 3.14 for Pi. Round to two decimals places.) Thanks again for your help. Sharon

AREA=PI*R^2
AREA=*3.14[(72+4)/2]^2
AREA=3.14(76/2)^2
AREA=3.14*38^2
AREA=3.14*1444
AREA=4534.16 IN^2 WILL BE REQUIRED.
OR ABOUT 3.5 YDS^2.

Hi Sharon,
In order to complete her task Sally needs to cut a circle with a diameter of 72 inches + 4 inches for hemming or a total of 76 inches.
1. We will be using the formula for the area of a circle (Pi r^2 = Area)
Since r = the radius of the circle and the radius is equal to half of the diameter our value for r = 76/2 or 38
2. Pi r^2 = Area in square inches of fabric required for the job
3. Pi(r)(r) = Area
3. (3.14)(38)(38) = 4534.16 square inches (to two decimal places)
Hope this helps!
