Two cars leave the same point, traveling in opposite directions. If one travels at a constant speed of 52 miles per hour and the other travels at a constant speed of 58 miles per hour. In how many hours will they be 385 miles apart?
-------------------
1st car DATA:
rate = 52 mph ; time = x hrs. ; distance = 52x miles
--------------------
2nd car DATA:
rate = 58 mph ; time = x hrs. ; distance = 58x miles
----------------------
EQUATION:
distance + distance = 385
52x + 58x = 385
110x = 385
x = 3.5 hrs.
