A plumber earns $15 per hour more than his apprentice.
In each 40-hour week, their combined earnings are $2200.
What is the hourly rate for each?
:
let a = the apprentice's hourly wage
then
(a+15) = the plumbers wage
:
40a + 40(a+15) = 2200
40a + 40a + 600 - 2200
80a = 2200 - 600
80a = 1600
a = 1600/80
a = $20 an hour for the apprentice
I'll let you find the plumber's wage, check it out in the total wage equation

A plumber earns $15 per hour more than her apprentice.
In each 40-hour week, their combined earnings are $2200.
What is the hourly rate for each?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let x be the plumber's rate per hour, in dollars.
Then the apprentice rate per hour is (x-15) dollars.
The combined earning per 40-hours week equation is
    40x + 40*(x-15) = 2200.
Simplify and find x
    40x + 40x - 600 = 2200
    80x = 2200 + 600 = 2800
      x              = 2800/80 = 35.
ANSWER.  The plumber's hourly rate is $35.  The apprentice's hourly rate is $20.
CHECK.   Combined earning for 40-hours week is 40*(35+20) = 2200 dollars.   ! correct !
A plumber earns $15 per hour more than her apprentice. In each 40-hour week, their combined earnings are $2200. What is the hourly rate for each?
Let hourly rate of plumber be $ x
and that of apprentice be $y
A plumber earns $15 per hour more than her apprentice.
x=y+15...............1
40x +40y=2200...................2
substitute x in eqn 2
40(y+15) +40 y = 2200
80y+600=2200
80y = 2200-600
80y = 1600
y= 20
x=y+15
x = 20+15=35
