The author of the problem, in an attempt to use unusual language to present the problem, has come up with an expression that is not correct English and whose meaning is unknown.
If your post shows the problem exactly as it was given to you, then we can't help.
If you have restated the problem in your own words, then re-post, using standard mathematical language.

Looking at the question as tutor @ikleyn found it on the internet, the correct wording of that phrase is "... exceeding twice my youngest son's age by three years."
It is a good idea when you post a problem for you to look at what you are posting before you post it.
Note the page referenced by tutor @ikleyn shows the solution... in which the man's current age is 30, making the age of his eldest son 7.5 years. That violates standard rules that ages in age problems must be positive integer numbers.
