Question 1177634: You are returning from the farm with a bag full of oranges. On the way, your friend Sammy begged and you gave him one third. On reaching home, you gave a quarter of the remaining oranges in the bag to your mother and had 24 left. How many oranges did you have in the bag to begin with?
Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
bag had x oranges
after Sammy, there were 2x/3 oranges
(2x/3)*(3/4)=24, multiplying by 3/4, since you gave away a quarter of them
6x/12=24
6x=288
x=48 oranges
you gave 16 to Sammy and had 32 left
You gave a quarter of 32 (8) to your mother and had 24 left.
