L = the value of the larger number
S = the value of the smaller number.
the sum of the to numbers is 87, therefore L + S = 87
the large number subtracted from twice the smaller number is 18, therefore 2S - L = 18
you have to equations that need to be solved simultaneously.
they are:
L + S = 87
2S - L = 18
solve for l in both equations to get:
L = 87 - S
L = 2S - 18
since L = L, then 87 - S = 2S - 18
add 18 to both sides of the equation and add S to both sides of the equation and combine like terms to get:
105 = 3S
solve for S to get:
S = 105/3 = 35
since S + L = 87, then L = 87 - 35 = 52.
you have:
S = 35
L = 52
S + L = 35 + 52 = 87
2S - L = 70 - 52 = 18
solution is confirmed to be good.
solution is the larger number is 52 and the smaller number is 35.
