Answer by math_tutor2020(3817)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

c = number of cats
d = number of dogs

"The total number of cats and dogs at the shelter is 125" means c+d = 125

"There are 5 more cats than dogs" means c = d+5
Whatever d is, we add on 5 to get c

Apply substitution to solve
c+d = 125
(c)+d = 125
(d+5)+d = 125 ... c replaced with d+5
d+5+d = 125
d+d+5 = 125
2d+5 = 125
2d+5-5 = 125-5
2d = 120
2d/2 = 120/2
d = 60

Use this value to find c
c = d+5
c = 60+5
c = 65

Answer: 60 dogs and 65 cats

When you post a problem, take the time to ask the question you have. In this case, it is obvious what the question is... but it shouldn't be our responsibility to determine what the question is; YOU should ask it.

------------------------------------------------------------

If you are going to use formal algebra to solve the problem, make your work a lot easier than what is shown by the other tutor by using a single variable.

Since the number of cats is 5 more than the number of dogs...

let d = number of dogs
then d+5 = number of cats

The total number of animals is 125:

ANSWER: 60 dogs and 65 cats.

You can do exactly the same calculations to get the answer informally, without formal algebra:

(1) Count the 5 "extra" cats and set them aside.
(2) That leaves equal numbers of cats and dogs, with the total number of animals now 125-5 = 120.
(3) So the remaining animals are 120/2 = 60 each of cats and dogs.
(4) Now bring back those 5 "extra" cats to see that there are 60 dogs and 60+5=65 cats.

.

Had this problem arrived with the question,  I would show you two nice short solutions,
presented in the form  "as it  SHOULD  be".

But since you demonstrate an  EXTREMAL  form of impoliteness,  posting the request with no question,
I will not work for you.

The posts with no question/questions ARE PROHIBITED at this forum.

A question specially for tutors @greenestamps and @Math_tutor2020

    Why you, people with university education, encourage/allow boorish behavior of the visitors,

    who submit their requests omitting questions ?

    They should be taught to the rules of civilized communication BEFORE and EVEN MORE than Math.
