Question 1145874: A person plans to invest three times as much in an account at 4% interest as in an account at 14% annual interest. How much should the person invest in each account to earn a total of $ 260 in one year?
Answer by ikleyn(52794)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
Let x be the amount invested at 14% (in dollars, of course).

Then the amount invested at 4% is 3x ("three times as much . . . ").

The total interest is the sum of partial interests

    0.04*(3x) + 0.14x = 260   dollars.

Simplify and solve

    0.12x + 0.14x = 260

    0.26x         = 260

        x         =  = 1000.

ANSWER.  $1000 invested at 14% and 3 * $1000 = $3000 invested at 4%.

CHECK.   0.14*1000 + 0.04*3000 = 260  dollars.   ! Precisely correct !
