The combination of words  "total cost per person"  is incorrect usage of English and mockery on common sense.


There is "total cost".  It is  $500 in this problem.


And there is  "price", which by definition is the cost per one unit. In this post it is  $5 per person.


But  "the total cost per person" is an absurdist combination of words, which is NEVER used.
