Let a = cost of apple, in cents
Let r = cost of orange, in cents
r = a + 8 (1)
7a + 8r = 424 (2)
Substitute "a+8" from (1) into (2):
7a + 8(a+8) = 424
15a + 64 = 424
15a = 360
a=24 �> r=24+8 = 32

Ans: Apples cost 24 cents each (and Oranges cost 32 cents each.)

Check:
32 = 24+8 (ok)
7(24) + 8(32) = 168 + 256 = 424 = $4.24 (ok)
