Question 1087200: A preschool charges $7 for a child to attend its morning session or $12 to attend the afternoon session. No child can attend both. Thirty children are enrolled in the preschool. If the daily receipts are $265, how many children attend each session?
Answer by addingup(3677) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
morning: x
afternoon: y
x+y = 30 subtract x from both sides:
y = 30-x
----------------------------------------
7x+12y = 265 substitute for y:
7x+12(30-x) = 265 distribute the 12 (Distributive Property of Multiplication)
7x+360-12x = 265
-5x = -95 divide both sides by -5, and remember -/- = +
x = 19 these are the children that attended the morning session
and we said y = 30-x = 30-19 = 11 these attended the afternoon session
