The remaining four friends must therefore each increase their share by US$ 4.500. Calculate the price of the land.

I will solve it MENTALLY, without using equations.


It is clear from the condition that the contribution of the two friends who decided to back out, should be 4*4500 = 18000 dollars.


Hence, the price of the land is three times this, i.e. 3*18000 = $54000.
