let x equal 1 of the numbers.

since the number are consecutive, then the next number is x + 1.

the sum of the smaller number and 3 times the larger number is 103.

that becomes x + 3 * (x + 1) = 103

simplify to get x + 3x + 3 = 103

combine like terms to get 4x + 3 = 103

subtract 3 from both sides to get 4x = 100

solve for x to get x = 25.

the smaller number is 25.
the larger number is 26.

the sum of the smaller number and 3 times the larger number is equal to 25 + 3 * 26 which is equal to 25 + 78 which is equal to 103.

this confirms the solution is correct.

Let the larger number be L
Then smaller = L - 1
We then get: L - 1 + 3L = 103
4L = 103 + 1
4L = 104
L, or larger number =
That's all.....nothing COMPLEX nor CONFUSING!
