The length of a red rectangle is 15cm more than its width w. A blue rectangle, which is 5 cm wider and 2 cm shorter than the red one, has perimeter 72cm. Make a sketch of the rectangles expressing all dimensions in terms of w. Then find the dimensions of each rectangle. This question is from textbook Structure and Method

The length of a red rectangle is 15cm more than its width w. A blue rectangle, which is 5 cm wider and 2 cm shorter than the red one, has perimeter 72cm. Make a sketch of the rectangles expressing all dimensions in terms of w. Then find the dimensions of each rectangle.
Larger rectangular;
L=W+15
W=W
========================
smaller rectangular;
L=w+15-2
W=W+5
2(w+13)+2(w+5)=72
2w+26+2w+10=72
4w+36=72
4w=36
w=9
=========================
Now we will plug the nine in for w, lets do the first one;
W=9
L=W+15
L=9+15=24
------------------------
w=W+5
w=9+5=14
l=w+13
l=9+13=22
=================================
