The coffee counter charges $10 per pound for Kenyan French roast coffee and $9 per pound for Sumatran coffee.
How much of each type should be used to make a 20 pound blend that sells for $9.35 per pound?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let x = "How much of the $10 per pound Kenyan French roast coffee (in pounds) is used to make 20 pound of blend".
Then (20-x) pounds is the amount of the $9 per pound for Sumatran coffee.
The balance equation
x*10 + 9*(20-x) = 20*9.35.
The left side is the cost of the blend calculated as the sum of components.
The right side is the same cost calculated via the price of the blend.
Thus you have a single linear equation for one unknown.
Once such simple guiding equation is obtained the problem is considered as solved.
The completion is just arithmetic. Please do it on your own.
