The sum of the ages of two brothers is 46. The younger brother is 10 more than a third of the older brothers age. How old is the younger brother?
-----------------
a + b = 46
a = (1/3)b +10
------------------------------
Substitute for "a" and solve for "b"::
(1/3)b + 10 + b = 46
(4/3)b = 36
b = 3*9 = 27 yrs
---
a = 46-b = 46-27 = 19 yrs
----------------
