Question 1019193: School held a Easter play that had a total of 260 students and adults attend the play. Tickets for the play cost $2/student and $5/adult for the play and a total of $1054 was collected for the play. State two equations for the problem and define the variables.
Answer by addingup(3677) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
s+a = 260 subtract s from both and you get: a = 260-s
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2s+5a = 1054 Substitute for a:
2s+5(260-s) = 1054
2s+1300-5s = 1054
-3s = -246 Divide both sides by -3 and remember -/- = +
s = 82 students and
260-82 = 178 adults
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Check:
82*2 = 164
178*5= 890
_ _ _ _-----
Total: 1054 we have the correct answer
