Alan is a plumber, and his coworker Bruce is an electrician. Alan charges customers a fee of $40 just to come to their houses and then $3 per minute that he is there. Bruce also charges a fee of $60 for a home visit, plus an additional $1 per minute. Last week the coworkers went to a job site together, spent the same amount of time working, and earned the same amount. How much did each one earn?

write a cost equation for each man

Alan charges customers a fee of $40 just to come to their houses and then $3 per minute that he is there.
C(m) = 3m + 40

Bruce also charges a fee of $60 for a home visit, plus an additional $1 per minute.
C(m) = 1m + 60
:
Last week the coworkers went to a job site together, spent the same amount of time working, and earned the same amount.
How much did each one earn?
The cost for each is equal, therefore find the number of minutes they worked
3m + 40 = m + 60
3m - m = 60 - 40
2m = 20
m = 20/2
m = 10 min

Alan:
C(m) = 3(10) + 40
C(m) = 30 + 40
C(m) = $70
Bruce:
C(m) = 1(10) + 60
C(m) = $70

We can say they both earn $70 if the both work 10 min
