Question 1017402: Tickets for a play cost $14 for the main floor and $9 in the balcony. If the total receipts from 250 tickets were $3,000, how many of each type of ticket were sold
Answer by fractalier(6550) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Call the tickets for the main floor and balcony, m and b.
We can then write
m + b = 250 and the value equation is
14m + 9b = 3000
Now multiply the top equation by 14 and subtract it from the bottom one...
14m + 9b = 3000
-(14m + 14b = 3500)
--------------------
-5b = -500
b = 100 balcony tickets which means we have
m = 250-100 = 150 main floor tickets
