Question 1008376: At an altitude of 12,250 feet,a hot air balloon springs a leak and begins to be descending at a rate of 450 ft. Per minute. The last opportunity for the crew to safely jump out with a parachute is 1900 feet above the ground. How long from the time they Sprung the leak will they have before they are required to jump, use an inequality and solve.

At an altitude of 12,250 feet,
descending at a rate of 450 ft. Per minute.
Let the time they have to jump be x minutes
let the height above ground be y
The last opportunity for the crew to safely jump out with a parachute is 1900
The height after x minutes is given by
so y = 12250 - 450x
but they have to jump above 1900 feet
12250 - 250x >y
12250 -450x > 1900
12250-1900 > 450x
350>450x
350/450 >x
x < 7/9 minutes
