Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Write an equation for each statement
:
Yesterday a total of 24 students were present in Alfred's class.
g + b = 24
There were 3 fewer girls (g) than twice the number of boys (b).
g = 2b - 3
how many girls (g) and boys (b) are in the class?
:
using the first equation, replace g with (2b-3)
2b-3 + b = 24
2b + b = 24 + 3
3b = 27
b = 27/3
b = 9 boys in the class
:
Find the girls
b = 2(9) - 3
b = 15 girls
:
:
Check: 15 + 9 = 24
