The sum of the ages of joe and jim is 62. Five years from now, joe will be twice Jim's age. Find joe's present age? Sorry this question is not out of a text book.

b = jims age
The sum of the ages of joe and jim is 62:
a%2Bb=62 ..1
rearranging gives:
b=62-a ..2
Five years from now, joe will be twice Jim's age:
%28a%2B5%29=2%28b%2B2%29 ..3
Substitute equation (..2) into equation (..3) for b:
%28a%2B5%29=2%2862-a%2B2%29
%28a%2B5%29=2%2864-a%29
3a%2B5=128
3a=123
a=41 ..4
Substitute equation (..4) into equation (..2) for a:
b=62-41
b=21
