Question 79224: In 1980 the population of Springfield was 1911. In 1990 the number of people under 20 years old increased 10%, while the number of people in the 20-60 category decreased by 8% and the number of people over 60 increased by one-third. If the 1990 population was 2136 and in 1990 the number of people over 60 was equal to the number of people 60 and under, then how many were in each age group in 1980?
I need 3 systems to solve for 3 variables, x, y, z.
I made x= people under 20, y= people 20-60, and z= 60 and older
So this is what I got:
x + y + z = 1911
1.10x + .92y + 4/3z = 2136
4/3z = 1.10x + .92y
This is how I figured each system.
1. Groups x, y, and z total to 1911 people in 1980.
2. 10% increase = 1.10*x, 8% decrease = .92*y, and 1/3 increase = 4/3z for a total of 2136 people in 1990.
3. Because z = x + y IN 1990, the terms are defined by 1990: 4/3z = 1.1x + .92y
I can't come to any solution even close, my Y keeps coming out HUGE... I'm guessing I'm misunderstanding the word problem and setting up my systems wrong. Any help?
