Question 165221: Please help with this.
Judy averaged 42 miles per hour(mph) driving from Allentown to Harrisburg and 51 mph driving from Harrisburg to Pittsburg. If she drove a total of 288 miles in 6 hours, then how long did it take her to drive from Harrisburg to Pittsburg?
I set this up a 2 equations using a chart as: Distance Speed Time
Allentown to Harrisburg x 42 42x
Harrisburg to Pittsburg y 51 51y
Allentown to Pittsburg 288 288/6=48 6
Now x + y = 288
42x + 51y = 6 by substitition using y = 288 - x
42x + 51(288-x) = 6
42x + 14,688 -51x = 6
-9x = -14,682 and x = 1631.33
It works out when you plug back in, but can't be true since there is a total of only 288 miles. The y then is a negative number which satisfies the equation. Pleas help. Thanks Claudia

Question 165424: "If 2/3 of a number is added to the number, the result is 110. Find the numbers"
My solution:
2/3 = 67%
110 x 67% = 73.7
110 - 73.7 = 36.3
or
110 / 3 = 36.67
Therefore 2/3 would be 73.34 + 36. 67 = 110
Would both be correct, or neither?

Question 165642: "How much water must be evaporated for 120kg of solution which is 3% salt to make a solution of 5% salt?"
Please correct me if I'm wrong:
Let x = amount of water to be evaporated
0.03(120) - 0(x) = 0.05(120-x)
3.6 = 6 - 0.05x
0.05x = 6 - 3.6
x = 2.4 / 0.05
x = 48L

Question 165816: Can You Help me?
132.) Top bond fund. An investment of $10,000 in the Emerging Country Debt Fund in 2001 was worth $24,780 in 2006 (www.money.com) Use the formula :
r=(s/p)^1/n - 1 to find the 5 - year average annual return.
R is determined by the initial investment P, the number of years n, and the amounts S that it is worth after n years.
P = 10,000
n = 2006 - 2001 = 5 years
s = 24,780
We are searching for the value of r.
Here is the formula:
r = (24,780/10,000)^1/6 - 1
