Question 153433: I have a long word problem that I need help with.
In 2000, crude oil production by OPEC countries was 29.2 million barrels per day. In 2002, OPEC crude oil production had risen to about 28.7 million barrels per day.
a)write two ordered pairs of the form (years after 2000, crude oil production) for this situation.
b)assume that the relationship between years after 1997 and crude oil production is linear over this period. Use the ordered pairs from part (a) to write an equation of the lines relating year to crude oil production.
c)Use the linear equation from part (b) to estimate the crude oil production by OPEC countries in 2001.
I am not sure how to work this problem. or where to start.

Question 154017: Walt made an extra $9000 last year from a part-time job. He invested part of the money at 9% and the rest at 8%. He made a total of $770 in interest. How much was invested at 8%.
I believe the answer to be $4000 invested at 8% because
$4000x.08=$320 and $5000x.09=$450 so $320+$450=$770. I Cannot however figure out how to put this in a linear equation. Please help.

They pass one another 3 hours later. What are their speeds? I think the speed of the freight may be 100km/hr and express would be 130km/hr, using the velocity = distance/time equation, but I am not quite sure of the formula and expression, or the answer for that matter. So if you could please help me I would appreciate it.

Question 155758: If you would please help me solve this word problem:
The length of a rectangle is 1 inch less than three times the width. If the length is increased by 6 inches and the width is increased by 5 inches, then the length will be twice the width. Find the dimensions of the rectangle.
So far this is what I have done: Let x=the width
Since the length = 3x-1, I added the 6 inches and double the width.
I have for an equation:
(3x-1)+6 = 2x
However when I solved it it turned out to be:
3x+5=2x
x+5=0
x=-5
But, as you can see, I can't have a negative dimension in a rectangle! D:!!
So please, can you point out what I did wrong ;-;? Please and thank you!

Question 155853: Hi, This is my second question regarding word problems.
I need to write an equation in either the slope-intercept form, or the standard(general)form.
I 1990, there were 4.24 million children in the united states with physical disabilities. In 1998 the number was 5.2 million.
a) Assuming that the trend is linear, write an equation relating the two, where y=number of children with physical disabilities in the u.s., and x= the number of years since 1990 (x= 0 corresponds to 1990). I think the slope for should be y=mx+b for the first part but I'm confused about how to use the numbers.
b) Use your equation to answer the following questions:
If this trend continues, how many children with physical disabilities would there be in the u.s in 2010?
Thanks,
