Question 47914: I'm having a hard time with this problem. I'm not sure if I'm doing this right.
It says solve the system by the elimination method
7x+5y=42
4x-3y=24
doing this I came up with this 28x+20y=168
28x-21y=168
some how I end up with -1. I'm trying to cancell out the x but the 168 is bothering me, it doesnt look right. Please help me

Question 49645: Solve for the variable:
2(y – 1)^2 = 4(y + 1)^2
2(y^2 – 2y + 1) = 4(y^2 + 2y + 1)
2y^2 – 4y + 2 = 4y^2 + 8y + 4
2y^2 – 4y^2 – 4y – 8y + 2 – 4
-2y^2 – 12y – 2 = 0
a = -2
b = -12
c = -2
2 +/- sqrt[-12^2 - (4)(-2)(-2)] / [(2)(-2)]
12 +/- sqrt[144 - 16] / -4
-3 +/- sqrt 128
Make sense? I have it in a Word Doc using Math Type.

Question 50102: Hi, this question has me confused. It is suppose that the vertex of the parabola is y=3x^2-6x+k is (1,2). Find k.
Do I replace y with 2 and the x with 1 and come to a conclusion from there??? I'm not sure. Thanks.

Question 50099: Well I will start off saying I know I have the wrong answer somewhere and I know that because I put my answers into the original equations and they don't work. I have trouble when you throw that third variable in so if someone can tell what is right (if anything) and where I went wrong. Thanks!! Andrea
(a)
2x – y + z = 8
x + 2y + z = -3
x - 2y – z = 7
(1 & 3)
3x – 3y = 15
x – y = 5
2x = 4
x = 2
2 – y = 5
y = -3
2 + 2(-3) + z = -3
z = 1
(b)
3x - y - 2z = 11
x – 2y + 3z = 12
x + y - 2z = 5
(1 & 3) = (4)
4x – 4z = 16
(2 & 3) = (5)
x – 2y + 3z = 12
2x + 2y – 4z = 10
3x + z = 22
(4 & 5)
4x – 4z = 16
3x + z = 22
4x – 4z = 16
-12x + 4z = -88
-8x = -72
x = 9
3(9) + z = 22
27 + z = 22
z = -5
9 – y – 2(-5) = 5
9 – y + 10 = 5
19 – y = 5
-y = -14
y = 14

Question 50378: can you show me the detailed steps for solving for x in the following equation?
2.15x + 2.55*(1-x)=2.516
I can get as far as:
x=2.516-2.55*(1-x)/2.15
but I am unsure how to complete from there.
Thank you in advance for your help.
