Question 244772: Solve using the substitution method. Show your work. If the system has no solution or an infinite number of solutions, state this.
5x - 2 = y
y - 5x = 1
Here is what I put as my answer not sure if I did it right
5x-2=y
+2 +2
________
5x=y+2
________
5 5
x=y+2/5
y-5(y+2/5)=1
y-5y+10/5=1
y+5-5y+10/5=1
5*4y+15/5=1
4y+15=1
-15 -15
_______
4y=-14
_______
4 4
y=3.5 (3 1/2)
x=(3 1/2+2)/5
x=5 1/2/5
x= 11/10
I have another one if you don't mind also
Solve using the elimination method. Show your work. If the system has no solution or an infinite number of solutions, state this.
-0.9x + 0.8y = 14.6
-0.3x + 0.1y = 3.7
Here is what I put as an answer
-9x+8y=146
-3x+1y=37
__________
-27x-24y=438
+27x+9y=338
____________
15y=100
________
15 15
y=6 1/3
-9x+8*19/3=146
8/1*19/3=152/3
9x+152/3=146
-152/3 -152/3
