Question 127468: Using systems of equations(addition/elimination or substitution) solve this problem.
A Honda Accord gets approximately 26 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city. Bill drove 349.5 miles on a full tank (16 gallons) of gasoline. Using a two equation system of equations, determine approximately how many miles were driven in the city and on the highway.
I tried dividing 349.5 by 16 gallons to get mileage and using the following equations. 26H + 19C = 21.84 and H + C = 349.50

Question 127894: I am SO confused on this one, i already tried to solve this but when i checked by substittuting, they weren't equal.
Solving Systems by Substitution:
a = 2/b - 3
a = 2b - 18
I'm supposed to find the solution as a point like: [2,-4] but i have no idea if the a or b is x. Please help me with this!
I tried this: 2/b-3=2b-18 thats all i know that im pretty sure is right then times 2 on both sides -3=4b-18 then add 18 and -15=4b divide by 4 and thats 3.75 but when i put that into the other equation like 2*3.75 thats -10.5 and the final was -10.5 = 2/3.75 - 3 and thats -10.5 = .5 - 3 which is -10.5 does not equal -3.5 Im so confused and don't know what i did wrong!
THANK YOU SO MUCH

Question 128751: Mary has a $90 gift certificate for a book store where paperbacks cost $9 and hardback books cost $12. She must spend at least $25 and no more than $90 to use the gift certificate. Write a system of inequalities to determine the formula for using the gift certificate.
I came up with 9x + 12y is less than or equal to 90; and 9x + 12y is greater than or equal to 25. Is that correct?
