Question 16011: I am confused on how to do elimination. I know how to the basic kind like 5x-2y=4, and x=2y=8. But how do you do it when the signs don't match up like 7x-4y=-10 and 4y=x-2. I am so confused on that part of elimination. Also how do you do x=2y=-2 and 4x=2y=-17. Here's what I have done for the first one.
7x-4y=-10
x=4y=2
8x=-8
x=-1 and y=3/4

Question 16164: Hi there. I have a system, and I have tried to solve it two ways: substitution and table of values for each equation. Notice the lines should be perpendicular. When I graph them the lines are NOT perpendicular. When I solve by substitution, the answer I keep getting is (-3.2, -3.4) as a solution--which doesn't match the graph from the table of values. Help! Can you solve by substitution for me?
y=-1/2x-5
y=2x+3
Here's the table of values I got--the lines are NOT perpendicular but i can't figure out where I went wrong :(
For y=2x+3 my values were:
(-5, -7)
(-4, -5)
(-3, -3)
(-2, -1)
(-1, 1)
(0, 3)
(1, 5)
(2, 7)
(3, 9)
(4, 11)
(5, 13)

For y -1/2x=5, my values were:
(-5,-2.5 )
(-4, -3)
(-3, -3.5)
(-2, -4)
(-1, -4.5)
(0, -5)
(1, -5.5)
(2, -6.0)
(3, -6.5)
(4, -7)
(5, -7.5)

Question 17873: Hello, Im seeking help regarding Graphing,Subsitution,And Elimination Next to each equation I have a problem number in Parenthesis. This shouldnt affect you at all, But its there for reference on my part. Thank you in advance to whoevern decides to aid me.
My first problem (5) is x=4y+5
x=3y-2
How do I get a variable here? I have to do this problem using subsitution. The two x's confuse me. I've never seen a problem like this and its the only one I have. Some help please!! :)
My next problem(7) is with elmination
3x-5y=16
-3x+2y=-10

How do I do this? I've tried several times and just cant solve it.
My next problem is also similiar to the one before last, I can not get a variable to cancel out, But I have to multiply it and thus dont know what to multiply by!!!!!!!!

4x+7y=6
6x+5y=20
I have to decide what to do this one by Either sub,graphing,or elim

This is what I had tried, but I can't figure out what to do halfway through.
I multiplied everything by 6; the common denominator.
6(1/2)x + 6(1/3)x = (7)6
And then I got:
3x + 2x = 42
I subtracted 2x from 2x and then subtracted it from 42.
3x + 2x = 42 - 2x
- 2x
This is where I get stuck.
3x = 40x
