Question 883676: 1. Rhonda is considering two options to repave her driveway. The first option is asphalt, which costs $2,200.00 to install, but requires her to apply sealant every year at the rate of $115.00 per treatment. The other option is concrete, which costs $3550.00 and requires no annual maintenance.
a. Is either or both of these relationships linear? Why?
Answer by JulietG(1812) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! First option: 2200 +115a = final cost, where a is the number of years.
Second option: 3550 = final cost
There is no variable in the second option, and therefore not a linear relationship.
In the first option, if we plotted this on a graph, we would BEGIN at 2200 and then rise 115 each year. This creates a line. The line does not begin at zero, but it is still a linear equation, just starting at the fixed cost.
.
If Rhonda is going to stay in her house, she should lay the concrete ;-).
