Question 835695: hello, We have a story problem, and have to solve it with a linear equation, either substitution, elimination, tables, y1-y2, or graphs. We have tried the substitution method on this problem, and can't seem to figure out what we are doing wrong. is there something different we need to be doing?
Antonio loves to go to the movies. he goes both at night and during the day. The cost of a matinee is $6.00. The cost of an evening show is $8.00. If antonio went to see a total of 12 movies and spent $86, how many night movies did he attend?
Thank you
Answer by josgarithmetic(39617) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A more complete question is, how many night movies and how many matinee or day movies, did Antonio attend?
ASSIGN VARIABLES.
x = count of daytime movies (matinees?)
y = count of night time movies
PRICES:
Matinees are 6 dollars/movie
Night movies are 8 dollars/movie
The total of 12 means that
The total spent $86 means that
THOSE are your two simultaneous equations for the system. Using either substitution or elimination should be a simple matter from here. Before either method, simplify the cost equation first. Use it as , after both sides divided by 2.

If chose elimination, multiply the movie count equation by 3 on both sides...
