Let W = the price of walnuts per pound.
Let A = the price of Almonds per pound.
From the problem description, you can write:
1) and
2)
To solve this sytem of equations by elimination, multiply equation 1) by 5 and equation 2) by 3.
1a)
2a)

1a)
2a) Subtract equation 2a) from equation 1a)

3) Divide both sides by 18.

The price of almonds is $5.00 per pound.

Answer by ptaylor(2198)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x= cost of 1 lb walnuts
And y=cost of 1 lb almonds
Now we are told that:
3x+6y=$51--------------------------eq#1
We are also told that:
5x+4y=$55------------------------------eq#2
Multiply eq#1 by 5 and we get:
15x+30y=$255-------------------------New eq#1
Multiply eq#2 by 3 and we get:
15x+12y=$165------------------------New eq#2
Subtract new eq#1 from new eq#2 and we get:
18y=90 divide both sides by 18
y=$5.00------------------------------- cost of 1 lb of almonds

substitute $5.00 for y in eq #1
3x+30=51 subtract 30 froom both sides
3x=21 divide both sides by 3
x=$7.00-----------------------------------cost of 1 lb of walnuts
CK

3*$7+6*5=$51
$21+$30=$51
$51=$51
also
5*$7+4*$5=55
$35+$20=$55
$55=$55

Hope this helps----------------ptaylor
