Question 77361: how to solve an equation of a line
Answer by checkley75(3666)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
THE LINE EQUATION HAS THE FORM Y=mX+b WHERE X&Y ARE THE POINTS ON THE GRAPH, m IS THE SLOPE & b IS THE Y INTERCEPT. THUS
Y=3X-4 REPRESENTS A LINE WITH A SLOPE (m)=3, A Y INTERCEPT (b=-4).
NOW TO FIND THE X & Y COORDINATES OF A POINT WE SET Y=0 & SOLVE FOR X & THEN SET X=0 & SOLE FOR Y THUS:
0=3X-4
3X=4
X=4/3 (4/3,0) IS THIS POINT
Y=-3*0-4
Y=-4 (0,-4) IS A SECOND POINT
THE GRAPH OF THIS EQUATION FOLLOWS:
(graph 300x200 pixels, x from -6 to 5, y from -10 to 10, y = 3x -4).
