Question 757690: 1/2x+2/3y=32
1/4x-5/9y=40
solve using the substitution method

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1/2x+2/3y=32
1/4x-5/9y=40
------
1st get rid of those fractions:
3x + 4y = 6*32
9x - 20y = 36*40
------
Solve for "y":
y = (-3/4)x + 48
y = (9/20)x - 72
-----------------------
Now, substitute and solve for "x"
(-3/4)x + 48 = (9/20)x - 72
[(9/20)+(3/4)]x = 120
----
(24/20)x = 120
(6/20)x = 30
x = 100
----
Solve for "y":
y = (9/20*100 - 72
y = 45-72
y = -27
