Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
5x - 2y =9,
3x + 4y =-5
We want to multiply one or both of the equations, so the coefficients of one of the variables is the same in each equation. Then we can add or subtract to eliminate one of the variables
:
In this problem, multiply the 1st equation by 2, then we have:
10x - 4y = 18
3x + 4y = -5
-----------------adding eliminates y, find x
13x + 0 = 13
x = 13/13
x = 1
;
Use the 2nd equation to find y, substitute x with 1 and you have:
3(1) + 4y = -5
3 + 4y = -5
4y = -5 - 3
4y = -8
y = -8/4
y = -2
;
The ordered pair solution: 1 ,-2

Check these solution in the 1st original equation
5x - 2y = 9
replace x and y
5(1) - 2(-2) = 9
5 + 4 = 9; confirms our solution
Answer by lynnlo(4176) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
5x-2y=9
3x+4y=-5
STEP (1)FIRST MULTIPLY YOUR FIRST EQUATION BY 2
AFTER THAT IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS:
10X-4Y=18
3X+4Y=-5
STEP(2)ADD THE TWO EQUATIONS TOGETHER TO ELIMINATE
Y FROM THE SYSTEM
13X=13
STEP(3)FIND X
X=1
STEP(4)SUBSTITUTE THE VALUE FOR X INTO THE ORIGINAL
EQUATION TO SOLVE Y
5(1)-2Y=0
Y=-2
ANSWERS ARE==============X=1,,,,,,Y=-2
